Myra Kawaguchi has been working in the field of psychology and health care for twenty years. She has worked with males and females of all ages from diverse backgrounds and orientations and in a variety of settings; including medical (prenatal, pediatric, adolescent medicine), community mental health, college counseling, inpatient psychiatric, and shelter settings. She has a masters and doctoral degree in clinical psychology and has taught developmental psychology and led psychotherapy seminars for interns. Myra has conducted individual, couples, family and group therapy and has an extensive supervised training in a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches. She completed an American Psychological Association (AP A) accredited internship as well as postdoctoral clinical training. Myra has extensive clinical experience working with girls and women on health, development, and relationship issues. Dr. Kawaguchi has published research in her areas of special interest which include: health care issues; parenting; adolescent and young adult development; family and couple relationships; and self-concept.
As a therapist, she takes time to consider each client as a unique individual with unique strengths and difficulties. She believes that in order for therapy to be effective, there must be a good “fit” between client and therapist and a mutual understanding of the goals and planned course of therapy. Because of this, Myra collaborates with clients to tailor therapy to their strengths and needs. Dr. Kawaguchi respects clients’ spiritual beliefs. Her approach is developmentally grounded. She attempts to understand clients in the context of the bigger picture or story of their lives. This perspective helps clients to use therapy both in the present and beyond the time they are in therapy. Whether thoughts, feelings or actions are being discussed in therapy, Myra views interpersonal relationships as a key context for personal growth. Her own relationship with a client can serve as an emotional anchor, a mirror for increasing self-awareness and a safe place for exploration and practicing new skills. Dr. Kawaguchi is trained in and can provide short or longer-term therapy.
Given her emphasis on health and relationship issues in a developmental context, the following
client concerns are examples of problems particularly well-matched to Dr. Kawaguchi’s skills and interests:
